HERE News - Fall, 2011:
On the road since Sundance and Berlin

There is a massive amount of news to catch up on, especially if you haven't been following HERE on Facebook. The film has been traveling the world non-stop since its World Premiere at the 2011 Sundance Festival and European Premiere in Berlin (Winner, C.I.C.A.E. Award), with sold out screenings in Istanbul, Sydney, Karlovy Vary, Yerevan, Melbourne, Milan (Opening Night!) and more in the U.S. and abroad.*

We are thrilled that Strand Releasing will distribute HERE in early 2012. Madman Entertainment has taken Australian rights, Falcon Films has the Middle East and NHK will distribute HERE in Japan. More news soon.

In November, HERE will travel to the Houston Cinema Arts Festival with Composer Michael Krassner and the Boxhead Ensemble for screenings and a rare performance of the live cinema event HERE [ THE STORY SLEEPS ]. HERE will also screen at the Vermont Film Festival and Tuscon's Loft Film Festival in November. Additional 2011 festival screenings include Sao Paulo, Stockholm, Taipei, Ljubljana, and the American Film Festival in Warsaw, Poland. Watch the Facebook page for updates.

The News:

Well, we did it!� This summer, an award-winning 40-member international film crew came�together to produce HERE,
the first American�feature film ever shot in�Armenia.� Post-production is now underway in New York. Read director
Braden King's reflections on this intense adventure on the film's blog.�

Also up on the blog is the first episode of Project Documentarian Ava Berkofsky's gorgeous "Postcards from HERE",
an impressionistic video series that explores the travel, experiences, landscape and moods surrounding the making of the film.

Braden King will be speaking and showing select clips from HERE at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival as part of a panel called
"The Discovery Process". Scientists and storytellers will discuss what it means to be compelled by a passion for mysteries and the

HERE / Feature Film Update - WRAPPED!

Friends,

As many of you are aware, I have been in Armenia for the past four months directing a feature-film entitled HERE. We wrapped the final pickup shots last night. I had hoped to send out a production notice earlier in the process but getting this 35mm road movie shot in a location like Armenia has been quite a consuming (and rewarding) endeavor. It would not have happened at all without the unrelenting efforts of my primary producers, Lars Knudsen and Jay Van Hoy, the amazing international cast and crew that came along on this trip and the belief that the film's funders, financiers and other supporters put behind us. It's been quite a journey. Deep thanks to all who helped us to get to this place.

The production has been loosely documented on the project's Facebook and Twitter pages (links below). In the course of the coming weeks and months, we will be updating the film's website with additional notes, blog entries, photos and video. If you like what you see, it would be a great gift to the project if you help spread the word by becoming a fan of the film on Facebook, following the production on Twitter, sharing these links with others and / or by making a tax-deductible contribution via our fiscal sponsor, The San Francisco Film Society, to help us get through post-production.

It will be some time before HERE is complete, but I wanted to get the word out that the film is in the can!

One winner each from Europe, Latin America, the United States and Japan is selected by members of an international jury. HERE, written by Braden King and Dani Valent, is one of the three U.S. finalists selected for the award, along with Jake Mahaffy's FREE IN DEED and James Ponsoldt's REFRESH, REFRESH. The winners will be announced during the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. HERE was also selected for the 2007 Sundance Writers and Directors Labs and received 2007 grants and awards from the Annenberg and Sloan Foundations. LIVE FILM AND MUSIC EVENT AT THE 2008 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL
This live, multi-media film and music event explores the pre-narrative ether from which the Movie emerges. A collaboration between filmmaker Braden King, composer Shahzad Ismaily and video artist Deborah Johnson along with guest musician Michael Krassner, [ THE STORY IS STILL ASLEEP ] literally and figuratively shines a light onto the Film's initial, unconscious, non-narrative points of origin and inspiration. In this case, the film is King's upcoming narrative feature, HERE: a dramatic, intensely visual, landscape-obsessed road movie that chronicles the relationship between an American satellite-mapping engineer and an expatriate art photographer who impulsively decide to travel together into uncharted foreign territory. Combining Johnson's dynamic multiple projections of King's scouting and research footage, film "samples" of past and related work and Ismaily's improvised score and sound design, [ THE STORY IS STILL ASLEEP ] creates a literal and metaphoric map of the at

A few brief news items to kick off '07:

"HERE" SELECTED FOR 2007 SUNDANCE SCREENWRITERS' LAB
Braden King and co-writer Dani Valent have been awarded a Screenwriting Fellowship from the Sundance Institute for their feature film script, HERE. The film is a structurally unique, landscape-obsessed road movie in which a solitary satellite mapping engineer charts the Armenian countryside with an expatriate art photographer revisiting her homeland. HERE is being produced by Julia King (AMERICAN SPLENDOR). Braden will be attending the Screenwriters' Lab from January 12 - 17, 2007. In other HERE news, Julia King has been awarded one of two IFP sponsorships to attend the 2007 Producers' Lab at the Rotterdam Film Festival's CineMart Co-Production Market. She and Braden will be attending CineMart and the Festival.

SONIC YOUTH: "RAPTURE" AT ROTTERDAM
"Do You Believe in Rapture?", a music video elegy for New York's recently closed CBGB, will screen at the 2007 Rotterdam Film Festival on January 31 and Feburary 2. The video was directed by Braden King. King also directed a video for the single "Reena" (both are from the most recent Sonic Youth album "Rather Ripped" and can be seen at http://www.truckstopmedia.com and on Sonic Youth's website: http://www.sonicyouth.com.

TRASH RELEASED BY ALPHABET CITY PRESS
Alphabet City's most recent anthology, TRASH, was released October 15, 2006. It features contributions by Edward Burtynsky, Heather Rogers, Nick Cave, Braden King and numerous others. King collaborated with Armenian filmmakers Tigran Xmalian and Gariné Torossian on [ IN | OUT ], a photographic and textual exploration of the ways in which post-Soviet Armenia conceives of domestic borders and sorts its metaphysical junk. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy: "Horses" at IFC through Aug. 29

New York's IFC Center is one of the few (if not the only) U.S. cinemas to show a rotating program of short films before every feature film. IFC refers to the program as "Short Attention Span Cinema".

Aug. 23-29, "Short Attention Span" will feature Bonnie 'Prince' Billy: "Horses", directed by Braden King.

In anticipation of MOVIE NIGHT WITH WILL OLDHAM on September 18, the IFC Center (NYC) is presenting a series of shorts featuring songs by Oldham's Palace Music and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy.

A prolific and influential musician, Oldham has performed under a multitude of names: Palace, Palace Music, Palace Brothers, Palace Songs, Bonnie Prince Billy and others. He has also been involved in projects and bands such as The Amalgamated Sons of Rest, The Anomoanon and The Boxhead Ensemble. The ghostlike musical intimacy of his quiet singing and the spacey, unobtrusive acoustic accompaniment has garnered Oldham fans worldwide, especially in Ireland and Australia, and inspired some impressive artists to cover his songs. These range from Johnny Cash, whose wife, June Carter Cash, demanded he record Oldham's "I See a Darkness" after hearing it on a mix tape, to the Icelandic pop star Bjork, with whom he sang on the soundtrack of Matthew Barney's DRAWING RESTRAINT 9.

New Sonic Youth Video to Premiere on MTV2 : Subterranean

TRUCKSTOP Media has completed a video for the song "Do You Believe in Rapture?" from the most recent Sonic Youth album, "Rather Ripped". The clip will premiere on this week's episode of Subterranean on MTV2. Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore from the band will be the show's featured guests.

The video was directed by Braden King. Edited by Brett Nicoletti.
Shooters included Jem Cohen, Godlis, Chris Habib, Andrew Kesin and Sam Levy.
It was produced by Julia King with coordinator Katie Stern.

Subterranean airs at 1 a.m. ET this Saturday night / Sunday morning.

Just a couple of quick news items to digest over the U.S. holiday weekend:

1. DUTCH HARBOR RE-RELEASED THEATRICALLY IN FRANCE

Braden King and Laura Moya's lyric Aleutian Island portrait, Dutch Harbor: Where the Sea Breaks its Back, opened theatrically in Paris on November 23 and will expand to other cities throughout France and the Benelux region in the coming weeks. The release is being handled by E.D. Distribution (Guy Maddin, the Brothers Quay, Harmony Korine). A summary of French press (four stars from French Premiere!), cinemas and screening times, the French trailer, a photo gallery and a few 'secrets de tournage' can be found at Allocine. Watch for the DVD release in the spring on Plexifilm. The film's soundtrack is available from Atavistic.

2. DIRTY THREE / CHAN MARSHALL VIDEO: "GREAT WAVES" COMPLETED

Braden King recently directed the video for the single "Great Waves" from the new Dirty Three album Cinder (Touch and Go / Bella Union). The song is a gorgeous collaboration between Dirty Three and Chan Marshall (Cat Power). DP duties were handled by Sam Levy. The video also features additional footage shot by Matt Boyd and Jem Cohen.
